Beauty Doesn’t Have To Cost The Earth

It’s no secret that EVERYTHING we do has an impact on the environment, and this includes our beauty regime. From the brands we choose to support, to the way we dispose of the packaging our chosen products are contained in, it’s time to start consciously thinking about all of the little ways we can become more sustainable in our daily lives and beauty routines.

DID YOU KNOW: THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY PRODUCES 120 BILLION UNITS OF PACKAGING EVERY YEAR?

If we want to support our planet, then reducing our consumption and waste is a great place to start. Here we share some #greenbeautytips that will help you to reduce your impact on our planet (and give you those good feels).

Tip #1: Support Brands with Sustainable Packaging.

This is an easy one – basically voting with your dollar! Only purchase products that are housed in sustainable packaging. Think glass, aluminium, and other biodegradable packaging options like Inika’s sugarcane packaging . By doing so, you are encouraging the growth of the sustainable packaging movement and taking away from the demand of the plastics industry (which continues to contribute to the overwhelming amount of plastic waste)

Tip #2: Reuse & Repurpose Your Empties

By purchasing beauty products housed in glass jars, you can reuse them again and again by simply refilling them! Brands such as Oway offer this fantastic service, where once you’ve used up all of your product you can take it into a participating salon and have it re-filled at a DISCOUNTED
COST! Organica Hair & Body Bar is proud to be an Oway Salon where you can have your empties refilled, located in the heart of Airlie Beach !

Don’t need to refill them, or have extra glass jars? We love to repurpose our glass jars into vases for our indoor plants! Check out this interesting blog that shows you 20 indoor plants you can grow in jars and bottles .

Tip #3: Make a Conscious Swap

We’re talking about swapping out disposable beauty products for reusable ones – such as make-up remover pads, face cloths, waxing strips…there are more and more eco-conscious reusables hitting the shelves every day! Norwex is a great company for such items. They have a nifty pack of 5 reusable facial pads , that even come with their cute wash bag!

At Organica, we have partnered with fellow eco-warrior brand Paper Not Foil and use only #sustainable hair foils in our salon. These paper foils can be used up to 3x, and then are safely recycled.

PAPER IS RECYCLABLE AND COMPOSTABLE ALONG WITH NO TOXIC WASTE WHEN PLACED IN THE LANDFILL. UNLIKE TINFOIL THAT TAKES THOUSANDS OF YEARS TO BREAK DOWN, LEACHING TOXINS INTO OUR LAND AND WATERWAYS.

Tip #4: DIY Travel-Sized Products

Weekends away, road trips and business trips are the perfect opportunity to flex your sustainability muscle. Don’t rely on the low-quality, toxin-ridden, housed-in-plastic free toiletries you get at hotels and motels. Instead reuse your small empty containers (or purchase small glass ones that can be reused) and fill them with your favourite organic skin, hair care and beauty products!

Not only do you know what you’re putting on your body, you can feel good knowing this little easy-to-follow tip is helping you to reduce your carbon footprint and plastic wastage.

Tip #5: Check What’s In Your Products

It’s not just the packaging that can be detrimental to the earth, but also the ingredients that are in beauty products and makeup. Take for instance that gorgeous new shade of shimmery, glittery nail polish. Although it may look lovely, those little shimmery sparkles are usually made from micro plastics, that when washed off pollute our rivers and oceans.

Luckily, there are innovative #ecoconscious brands that are finding better, more planet-friendly ways. Take Sienna Byron Bay for example. Sienna is not only vegan, cruelty free, non-toxic, Benzo-free, and breathable but are also now the first micro-plastic free, aluminium free and nano-particle free nail polish in the world! And we are proud to stock this amazing brand in our salon.

We hope you will implement these easy-to-follow tips into your beauty routine, and if you have any others please share them in the comments!
